Some samples of our photos

Some shots are just a matter of getting a lucky break and seizing it - Mt. St. Helens from the air - May 2003

Taken with a Kodak DC-280 digital camera (f9.5 @ 1/250) from a commercial airplane

We have been interested in photography for years.  Like most folks, we've gotten some terrific photos and a lot of duds.  At one time, we had two Pentax Spotmatic SLRs and shot mostly slide film.  We replaced the Pentax cameras with a Canon EOS Rebel Sx and usually shot print film.  We decided to get into digital photography and bought a Kodak DC-280.  It served us well as we traveled with the Canon and the Kodak.  We wanted a smaller digital camera with higher resolution, and replaced the Kodak with a Minolta E323.  When I became aware of the Canon EOS Digital Rebel, I replaced the Minolta.  I got the new Canon with the 18-55mm lens, that equates to 29-88mm when you adjust for the sensor size.  We were also able to use the other lenses we had for the film Canon.  The Tamron 28-200 (equivalent to 45-320) and the Tamron 19-35 (equivalent to 30-56) worked fine.  Not so the Sigma 28-80.  Fortunately, we were able to send the Sigma lens in and have it rechipped, and it works fine now with an equivalent focal length of 45-128mm.  We took a photography class to improve the artistry of our photography, and part of the way through decided to abandon film altogether.  So we got a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT and a Canon 75-300mm lens (equivalent to 120-480mm).  On a recent trip to Europe we took the two Digital Rebels and only the two Canon lenses to hold down weight and bulk.  We were very happy with the results and are sold on digital photography.

We have included some our photographs (oh yes, I'm supposed to call them images) that we particularly like in this page.  Where possible, we have included information on the camera and lens settings.  Click on a thumbnail to see a larger version of any of the photos.  All the photos on this page can also be seen, along with many others, in our travel journals.  Those journals can be accessed through the Travels icon on the home page, and contain the stories of our trips and hundreds of photos we have taken along the way.

These three images were taken with a Kodak DC-280 during the summer of 2002.

These images were also captured with the DC-280, but during the summer of 2003.

Then in January of 2004 we were off to New Zealand, still packing our Canon EOS and our Kodak DC-280, and there was plenty to shoot.

Ah, now we move to 2005 and our trip to Costa Rica.  By this time we had acquired the first Canon Digital Rebel.  The next three shots were taken with that camera.

  ISO Speed - 100, 18-55mm lens @ 40mm, aperture f5.0, shutter speed 1/50

  ISO Speed - 400, 28-200mm lens @ 200mm, aperture f16, shutter speed 1/100

  ISO Speed - 1600, 28-200mm lens @ 28mm, aperture f10, shutter speed 1/200

On the next trip we had gone all digital, replacing the old film Rebel with a new Rebel XT.  We had also acquired the Canon 75-300mm lens, and took that lens and our Canon 18-55mm that we got with our Rebel 300D.  Here are a few of the images we captured on that trip.

  300D, ISO Speed 400, 18-55mm lens, aperture f9.0, shutter speed 1/200

  XT, ISO Speed 400, 18-55mm lens @ 55mm, aperture f9.0, shutter speed 1/160

XT, ISO Speed 400, aperture f5.6, shutter speed 1/13

  300D, ISO Speed 400, 75-300mm lens @ 250mm, aperture f5.6, shutter speed 1/100

  300D, ISO Speed 400, 75-300mm lens @ 200mm, aperture f6.3, shutter speed 1/320

  XT, ISO Speed 400, 18-55mm lens @ 21mm, aperture f8.0, shutter speed 1/200
