Aunt Nora's Baking Powder Biscuits

Aunt Nora's recipe never fails.  These little gems are very light and melt in your mouth.

One of Mel's cousins says they are actually Aunt Alma's and another cousin says they are Grandma's. Nobody knows for sure.

Servings: 2

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Start to finish: 20 minutes

Ingredients:
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
1/3 cup buttermilk - we use 1 1/3 tablespoons of powdered buttermilk and 1/3 cup water

Directions:
Mix all the dry ingredients.
Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the buttermilk or water.
Turn out onto a floured surface and knead, folding the dough over repeatedly, just enough to produce a consistent dough.

Pat to 1/2" thick and cut into biscuits.
Bake at 450° for 10-12 minutes or until the biscuits are golden.

Notes: Be careful not to work the dough too much, or the biscuits will not be as light.

Serving Ideas: Serve with butter/margarine, honey, and/or jam.
