March 12, 2020 We landed at London Heathrow and went for the Hoppa bus to the hotel. We were very surprised that the cost was £6 each. We could have taken a cab cheaper. March 13, 2020 We didn’t want to just sit round the hotel all day. We tried to make contact with my cousin Nicholas, but distance and conflicts prevented this. Instead we took an Uber to a site close by, the Battle of Britain Bunker, where the British set up an underground bunker to coordinate response to bombers from Germany.
It was so effective that the Germans didn’t know about it until after the war. There were 50,000 casualties in the Battle of Britain, I think mostly civilian. The Germans thought if they could defeat the RAF they could win the war. I thought the tracking system they set up was ingenious.
I was surprised that cousin Nicholas’ father was on the Role of Honor. He was the Squadron leader of the 92nd Squadron, the most successful of the battle. I had to dispute a charge for that foul-up when we got home. We walked about a block and made another request. This time the driver found us, but he had much difficulty doing so. Their nav app must not be too great. We walked to an Indian restaurant for dinner, then had a quiet time, awaiting anxiously to return home. March 14, 2020 We had breakfast in the hotel and took an Uber to the airport. Bulgaria has shut down its borders, so we feel we barely escaped. Flights to Spain from Britain have been turned around. We shall be most happy to be back on American soil. Our younger son, Matt, picked us up, although he had to wait for a couple of hours while we went through immigration. We heard that earlier in the day it was much longer. |
