Antelope Canyon

Friday, June 9 - Page, Arizona and Antelope Canyon

We left Cedar City relatively early for the drive to Page, Arizona.  Hard to believe, but we only learned on Antelope Canyon a few years ago when we were working our way through an on-line tutorial for our Canon digital camera.  It was a relatively easy drive and we got into Page in plenty of time to stow our luggage at the hotel and make our way to the tour.

Antelope Canyon is on the Navajo Reservation and access is controlled by the Navajos.  From Page it is about a 20 minute ride in a 'monster truck.'  We disembarked and went into the canyon, which was not at all like I had expected - I had thought it would be a large canyon, like Bryce.  Instead, it was small - maybe 1/2 mile long, and more like a deep cave with holes that sunlight pours through in spots.  However - ohmygoshisitbeautiful.  We had booked a 'photo' tour and the guide took us around in the 2 1/2 hours and pointed out the spots that only someone who had a lot of time would notice.  We took a lot of photographs, then spent the afternoon and evening going through them and trying to come up with the best of the best.  What a job!  We aren't all that accomplished photographers, but the subject matter allows you to be a pretty decent photographer without a lot of effort.

We were so glad to get back to our hotel after the trip - we were hot and gritty and tired.  We both took showers, worked on our photos (shown below), then went out for dinner.

In Park City we observed that most people were very slim.  Here in Page, most people are really heavy.  I'm not sure if it is cultural or genetics or available food supply, but the difference is significant.  The little restaurant we went to was so amazingly Western - lots of steak and potato fare.  We bucked the trend and had seafood.  Instead of potatoes, I asked for vegetables - horrors!.
